A grid connected system is simply a PV system which is connected to the electricity supplier’s distribution network, or ‘grid‘.

The electricity which is being produced by the PV system will either be consumed by the household or, if excess electricity is being produced, will be fed into the grid.

A meter measures the amount of electricity fed into the grid, and the amount of electricity consumed, thus calculating who should pay who. This type of system is virtually maintenance free.

A stand alone system uses batteries to store the DC voltage, which then is transformed in AC and used by the owner of the installation. Duration is according to the battery capacity.
